The Ants - the history they have ! Illustrious to say the least! Quick rundown of beginnings for the Ants is this- part of the first wave of UK punk rock scene- first as fans and groupies then on to being thier own band! They LOVED the Sex Pistols and the Damned - in fact the first show the Sex Pistols played had the band Bazooka Joe (fronted by Adam Ant ) open for them. Adam decided to start his own band after this gig which became known as the B-Sides , but he had no drummer. Then he met Jordan a Pistols groupie- who got him hooked up with the right folks and the Ants were born! ( some folks who played in or with the Ants went on to form many other well known bands such as Monochrome Set, Bow Wow Wow (which is all the original Ants with Annabella) , Rema Rema (who became Wolfgang Press , Renegade Soundwave mebers and Psychic TV ) to whom had the famous Guitarists Marco Pironi who later joined Adam on all the Ants recordings and Adams solo stuff. They also had John Moss who went on to help in formation of Culture Club . )
The Ants had a much different sound then Adam had with his solo career. Thier sound in my opinion is one that one has to be in the mood for- and the early on stuff on Ant Music ep and Dirk is a little more of big fan stuff ! Excellent stuff- but still not the same tribal ,pirate , cowboys and indians stuff the Ants became known for on Kings and Prince Charming ! Much harsher attitudes and sound- still some of the whole BDSM imagery ,Fetish imagery . Dirk was more angry , anti religious , futurism and erotica oriented. Kings went on to be the sound most remember - the tribal beat , pirate imagery , the cowboys and indians stuff and still harsh,then Price Charming reared its head- hood , but not as good as Kings , but brought the whole Victorian era UK , swashbucklers etc to forefront. Funny thing is- Adam felt the guys didnt have enough enthusiasm after making this album that he disbanded the Ants - and then got (on 3rd album) Grammy nomination for the Best New Artist . Thats the basic short sweet simple story of the Ants.
After all this- Adam went solo - took Marco with him ( after a brief stint with Siouxie and the Banshees)-and the first solo came in to being- the awesome and famous Friend or Foe. This tends to be the album most know him from ,producing the huge it "Goody Two Shoes" , but also had Desperate but not Serious , and a good Doors cover Hello I Love You (which was also covered by Missing Persons !). Strip was released and had a couple tunes produced by the one and only Phil Collins - and in fact he played drums on one track! This album was much more poppy sounding- very new wave pop ! I tend to listen to this one more then any of his stuff! Vive Le Rock- great cd after Strip. Great guitar and a little 50s and 60s influence in it! Lot about Space and cowboys!After this Adam decided to try out that "Minneapolis "sound (producer Andre Cymone )- little more dancey ,clubby sound. The hits Room at the Top and Cant Set Rules about Love were way up on charts ! Then- the never released Persuasion - interesting album (yes I have a copy hehehee and dont ask !!)- wish it could have been released- much more back into Adam sound and all BDSM stuff ! Wonderful came out- a more straight up rock cd- had its up and downs, some sad songs , some fun songs, and even yes, a little bit about sex again!! lol Now- first new album in 18 years is coming out-the Blueblack Husser - what I have heard is has some old sounding rock stuff - and who knows what else- we shall see- my expectations are not very high- but- I have been surprised before !
I have included here the album covers and a few tracks- the ones that typically dont get played or noticed but were actually good ! So I hope you enjoy- and maybe see a side of Adam you didnt know existed and maybe even check some of his "unknown" stuff and appreciate more then the its!!
